NDLEA Foils Smuggling of 50,000 Tramadol Pills, Seizes Cannabis Across Multiple States

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted an alleged trans-border trafficker attempting to smuggle 50,000 pills of Tramadol 225mg from Ghana into Lagos. This was disclosed by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr. Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Tramadol Seizure in Lagos

The illicit pills were concealed within the body compartments of a Toyota Hummer Bus belonging to GUO Transport Company. The vehicle, driven by the suspect, was intercepted at Ijanikin along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway during an intelligence-led operation on Saturday.

Major Cannabis Seizures Across Nigeria

In a separate development, NDLEA operatives conducted successful raids across several states, recovering large quantities of cannabis and other illicit substances:

  • Edo State:
    • 680kg of cannabis and a Sienna bus were seized in a bush path leading to Oghada forest, Orhionmwon LGA.
    • 180.5kg was recovered from a 31-year-old suspect, Cecilia Ibe, in Ofosu forest, Ovia South-West LGA.
    • 136.5kg was evacuated from a building in Otuo community, Owan East LGA.
  • Lagos State:
    A suspect was caught with 88.3kg of cannabis during a patrol along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
  • Kano State:
    A 30-year-old man was arrested at Gadar Tamburawa along the Kano-Zaria road, where 65,730 capsules of tramadol were recovered.
  • Kwara State:
    Operatives seized 120.8kg of cannabis and bottles of codeine at Gaa Odota, Ilorin West LGA.
  • Imo State:
    A suspect was arrested with 75kg of cannabis in Eziobodo, Owerri West LGA.
  • Oyo State:
    563.74kg of cannabis was recovered from a 60-year-old suspect in Iyalode, Iyana Church, Ibadan.

NDLEA Chairman, Buba Marwa, commended the agency’s operatives across Lagos, Edo, Kano, Kwara, Imo, and Oyo states for their dedication and operational successes. He highlighted the importance of a balanced approach to drug supply reduction and demand reduction efforts in curbing the menace of drug trafficking in Nigeria.
