CURRENT REPORT BLOG The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has demonstrated its strong commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse with a recent significant development. NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja Lagos, have intercepted various illicit drugs concealed in unconventional ways. This operation, which took place on Friday, August 25th, was a remarkable success in the fight against drug trafficking.
A Credible Intelligence Operation
The NDLEA operatives, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended a notorious drug trafficker named Suleiman Babatunde Oba. This individual was identified as a member of a cartel responsible for the distribution of a range of illicit substances, including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and ephedrine, across several countries. These countries include Nigeria, Brazil, Ghana, South Africa, Mozambique, and Europe.
Ephedrine in Semovita Packs
Suleiman Babatunde Oba’s arrest was particularly significant due to the discovery of ephedrine concealed in semovita packs. Ephedrine is a precursor chemical and an active ingredient used in the production of methamphetamine, a highly addictive and dangerous drug. This interception has not only prevented a substantial quantity of ephedrine from reaching its intended destination but has also disrupted the illicit drug production chain.
South African Connection
Suleiman Babatunde Oba, who possesses a South African passport, has lived in South Africa for over two decades and is married to a South African citizen. During the investigation, he identified Hakeem Babatunde Salami as the head of the drug ring. Salami, who resides both in Lagos and South Africa, was implicated in the drug trafficking operation. However, when NDLEA operatives conducted a follow-up raid at Salami’s residence located at 75 Wosilatu Dawodu Street, Ijesha, Aguda area of Surulere, Lagos, on Monday, August 28th, he had already fled the country.
