CurrentReport Blog The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a strong warning to the public against bush burning during the harmattan season to prevent the loss of lives and property.

The warning was delivered by the NEMA Head of Operations, Ojuedene Kenoma, during a training workshop in Edo State for local government officials and volunteers on disaster prevention, response, and control measures.

Strengthening Disaster Preparedness at Grassroots

Kenoma emphasized the need to foster a culture of disaster preparedness, awareness, and response at all societal levels, particularly in grassroots communities.

“Disasters such as tanker accidents, fire outbreaks, and other emergencies do not wait for the opportune moment. This workshop is a critical step toward empowering communities with the knowledge and tools they need to respond effectively,” he said.

He added that under the leadership of NEMA Director-General Zubaida Umar, the agency is building a network of trained emergency responders at the grassroots level to act swiftly in emergencies.

High-Risk Fire Incidents in Edo State

Kenoma highlighted the high risks associated with tanker accidents and fire outbreaks in Edo State, which continue to pose significant challenges. He urged workshop participants to cascade the training to the local population, focusing on fire prevention and emergency response strategies.

Expert Advice on Fire Safety

Superintendent Asimu Sumaila, a resource person at the workshop, stressed that safety is everyone’s responsibility. He revealed that 80% of fire incidents are caused by carelessness and negligence, such as leaving appliances plugged in or unattended burning of refuse.

“The solution for extinguishing ordinary fires is different from that for petrol (PMS) fires. Using the wrong method can escalate the situation,” he explained.

He also advised against bush burning near residential areas during the harmattan season, warning that such activities could lead to uncontrolled fires, property destruction, and loss of lives.

Key Fire Safety Tips from NEMA

  • Always unplug appliances when leaving home.
  • Avoid leaving refuse fires unattended.
  • Prevent bush burning, especially near residential areas.
  • Use appropriate methods to extinguish different types of fires.

This initiative by NEMA underscores its commitment to strengthening disaster management and reducing fire risks, particularly in vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
