In a recent announcement, WTO General Council Chairman Petter Olberg confirmed that Okonjo-Iweala emerged as the sole candidate for the role, with no other nominations submitted by the November 8 deadline.
The WTO initiated its nomination process for the next Director-General on October 8, allowing member nations until November 8 to propose candidates. Olberg stated that only one candidacy was received, from Okonjo-Iweala, in compliance with the established appointment procedures. The formal notification was circulated in document JOB/GC/406.
Okonjo-Iweala, who has served as Director-General since March 2021, has been recognized for her leadership in addressing global trade challenges, promoting inclusive growth, and navigating the organization through turbulent economic times. As the first African and first woman to hold the position, her candidacy for a second term is widely seen as a continuation of her impactful agenda.
