Niger State Governor Bago Urges Swift Action Against Food Hoarding Amid Major Corn Harvest

CurrentReport Blog Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has called on the state’s price control task force to take immediate action against aggregators hoarding essential food items. Speaking at the flag-off of Niger Foods’ corn harvest along Bida Road, Bago emphasized the importance of curbing artificial food scarcity, which drives up prices and impacts food availability.

The governor underscored that aggregators, by stockpiling food in warehouses, contribute to inflated costs for basic commodities. This move aligns with Bago’s “Feed the Nation Agenda,” which promotes mechanized agriculture as a pathway to food security.

With over 100,000 hectares of corn fields and 100 combined harvesters deployed, Niger State is targeting a yield of nearly one million metric tonnes of corn this year, in addition to significant harvests of rice, soybeans, sesame, guinea corn, and millet. The advanced harvesting equipment, Bago noted, could reduce losses by up to 90%.

During his visit, Bago also met with residents of Emi Guye and pledged basic amenities, including water and solar energy, to support the surrounding communities. Local leaders expressed gratitude for the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance agriculture and improve living standards across Niger State.
