CurrentReort Blog Workers in Niger State have taken decisive action by commencing an indefinite strike following what they perceive as the state government’s failure to address their demands. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chapter in the state issued the strike directive on Tuesday, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the government and its workforce.
The strike decision was fueled by the alleged reluctance of the state government to engage in meaningful negotiations concerning critical issues affecting the welfare of workers and the efficient functioning of the state. Idrees Lafene, the state chairman of the NLC, alongside Ibrahim Gana from the Trade Union Congress, instructed civil servants to initiate the strike, effective from 8 am on Wednesday until their demands are satisfactorily met.
In an attempt to avert the strike, the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, announced plans for a meeting on Tuesday afternoon to address the grievances. He emphasized the government’s willingness to engage in dialogue and its commitment to the welfare of the people. However, the planned meeting did not materialize, leading to confirmation from a reliable source within the organized labour union that the strike would proceed as planned.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Information Officer of the SSG, Tanko Lawal, were unsuccessful, as his phone line was unreachable. This lack of communication reflects broader challenges in addressing the concerns of the workers and underscores the urgency for dialogue and resolution.
