Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Commence Nationwide Protest Against Fuel Subsidy Removal

CURRENT REPORT BLOG The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that it will stage a nationwide protest on August 2nd to express its dissatisfaction with the policies of the President Bola Tinubu-led government and the did already, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy. The protest kick off at 7:30 am in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Workers and civil society organizations will gather at the Unity Fountain in Abuja to initiate the demonstration, while state chapters will simultaneously commence their protests.

Expressing Displeasure over Fuel Subsidy Removal
The NLC’s protest is a response to what it perceives as unfavorable policies, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy. The labor union believes that this decision by the government has led to a harsh economic situation for citizens, prompting them to take to the streets and voice their outrage.

Mobilization Efforts
According to Comrade Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Information, the union’s affiliate unions have mobilized their members in all states and are fully prepared for the protest. Additionally, appropriate security agencies have been notified to ensure the safety of demonstrators during the nationwide action. The NLC emphasizes that the international community will closely observe how the federal government responds to its citizens’ genuine concerns.

NLC’s Determination

The NLC has reaffirmed its readiness for the protest through its official Twitter handle, urging citizens to join in voicing their grievances against the removal of fuel subsidy. The union also questions the government’s commitment to reviving refineries or building new ones, expressing concerns over the impact on the less privileged who may be burdened with escalating petrol prices.

The NLC emphasized how government of President Tinubu disregarded them and forcefully removed fuel subsidy without due process, remember NLC and government of former president Buhari had an agreement on conditions and time frame for the removal of fuel subsidy but the present government overlooked .
