CurrentReport Blog The Nigeria Police Kano Command has debunked speculations surrounding the number of suspects arrested during Thursday’s #EndBadGovernment protests. Contrary to reports claiming 2,011 arrests, the command confirmed that 326 individuals were apprehended in connection with the incidents in and around the city.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, addressed the media during a press briefing on Friday at the Police Headquarters in Kano. During the briefing, Kiyawa paraded the suspects, which included old women and underage individuals, to set the record straight.
Kiyawa stated, “The Command clarifies the recent deliberate false and mischievous news circulating on social media platforms concerning the photos of suspects and exhibits involved in the destruction and looting of public and private properties under the guise of the planned #End Bad Governance Nationwide Protest.”
He further explained that the misleading reports suggesting some images were from 2011 are unfounded. “These despicable acts are calculated attempts by enemies of peace to tarnish the reputable image of the Nigeria Police,” Kiyawa asserted.
“These images showing suspects and exhibits are linked to the current incidents resulting from the ongoing August 2024 Nationwide Protest and have no relation with any incident in the year 2011,” Kiyawa clarified. He emphasized that the suspects arrested and paraded on August 1, 2024, were presented again on August 2, 2024, for transparency.
