The decision followed a motion presented by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari (APC, Oyo) during Wednesday’s plenary session. The motion, titled “Incessant Delayed and Cancelled Flights by Airline Operators in Nigeria,” highlighted growing concerns over the reliability of air travel in the nation.
Growing Concerns Over Aviation Reliability
Senator Buhari expressed concern over the frequent flight disruptions, stating, “Air travel is one of the most reliable and time-sensitive modes of transportation, often critical for business, official purposes, and scheduled appointments. The ongoing flight delays and cancellations undermine these objectives and are counterproductive to Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.”
The senator warned that such inefficiencies in the aviation sector could jeopardize the country’s push for economic diversification and attract foreign direct investments, which require adherence to global best practices.
Lawmakers Call for Action
Senate Minority Whip, Abba Moro, shared his personal frustrations with Nigerian airlines and urged for stricter regulatory measures, emphasizing the need for accountability within the aviation sector. He stated, “It is high time we took a stern stance on these issues to address the lapses in our regulatory agencies.”
