Nigerian Troops Arrest 258 Suspects, Neutralise 148 Terrorists in One Week

CurrentReport Blog The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced significant successes in ongoing internal security operations across Nigeria, with troops arresting 258 suspects, neutralising 148 terrorists, and rescuing 291 hostages within the past week.

Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja. Among the apprehended individuals were two suspected terrorist ammunition couriers, identified as Danweri and Abubakar Hamza, who were captured in Bauchi State’s Alkaleri Local Government Area.

Weapons and Ammunition Recovered

The troops seized a large cache of weapons, including:

  • 72 AK-47 rifles
  • 33 fabricated rifles
  • 28 Dane guns
  • Two PKT guns

They also recovered 2,599 rounds of ammunition, consisting of various calibres, and other operational tools such as three Baofeng radios, 36 motorcycles, 40 mobile phones, and cash totaling N1.8 million.

Operations in the Niger Delta

In the Niger Delta, troops dismantled 66 illegal refining sites and destroyed 68 crude oil cooking ovens, 41 boats, and 45 storage tanks. They also recovered:

  • 657,470 litres of stolen crude oil
  • 127,870 litres of illegally refined diesel (AGO)
  • 5,000 litres of kerosene (DPK)

Additional items seized included four speedboats, one drone, five vehicles, and 150 drums of oil products.

Impact on National Security

The intensified operations demonstrate the military’s resolve to combat terrorism, oil theft, and other criminal activities across the country. The DHQ urged Nigerians to continue providing intelligence to aid in achieving sustainable peace and security.
