CURRENT REPORT BLOG The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has set February 27th and 28th as dates for a nationwide mass protest, as revealed by NLC’s National President, Joe Ajaero, during a press conference at Labour House, Abuja.
The protest is a response to the prevailing hardship experienced by Nigerians, with the aim of pressing the government to address key issues affecting the populace. Notably, this move comes after an earlier Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was established on October 2, 2023, following a 16-point agreement between organized labor and government representatives.
The agreement primarily focused on alleviating the suffering caused by the removal of fuel subsidies and finding sustainable solutions to challenges such as the devaluation of the naira, inflation, and insecurity. However, with these issues persisting, the NLC has chosen to escalate their advocacy through mass protests.
The decision to engage in nationwide demonstrations underscores the urgency felt by the labor union in demanding tangible actions from the government to alleviate the plight of the masses.
Ajaero has accused the Federal Government of failing to implement the agreement reached in October while speaking in a media briefing.
He said, “It is regrettable that we are compelled to resort to such measures, but the persistent neglect of the welfare of citizens and Nigerian workers and the massive hardship leave us with no choice.”
