CurrentReport Blog The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held a closed-door meeting on Monday following the arrest of its National President, Joe Ajaero, by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). Ajaero was reportedly apprehended at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while en route to the United Kingdom to attend the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Britain.
In response to the arrest, NLC spokesman Benson Upah released a statement condemning the government’s actions. “The NLC remains resolute in its commitment to protecting workers’ rights and will not be cowed by the oppressive tactics of the state,” Upah said.
The NLC has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Ajaero, alongside the cessation of harassment against labor leaders and Nigerian citizens. The statement also called for the release of Nigerians detained for participating in #EndBadGovernance protests.
Upah further noted that the outcome of the ongoing emergency meeting will be communicated to the public in due course.
