NUJ Sokoto Elects New Leadership, Comrade Usman Muhammad Binji Emerges as Chairman

CurrentReport Blog The Sokoto State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has elected new executive members to oversee the union’s affairs for the next three years. The elections, conducted peacefully at the NUJ Press Centre on Saturday, marked a significant transition for the union.

Comrade Usman Muhammad Binji of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) Sokoto Network Centre emerged as Chairman after securing 86 votes, defeating Comrade Surajo Dalhatu Sifawa of Rima Television, who garnered 29 votes. Nasiru Muhammad Bello of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) was re-elected as Secretary for a second term.

Other executive members who were elected unopposed were presented with Certificates of Return and sworn in shortly after the election.

Chairman’s Inaugural Speech

In his inaugural address, Comrade Binji pledged to uphold the union’s principles and work toward creating a more vibrant and inclusive NUJ. He highlighted his commitment to improving the welfare and development of members, emphasizing the importance of training, capacity building, better working conditions, and professionalism.

“We will prioritize creating opportunities for growth, advocating for improved working conditions, and fostering a culture of excellence in journalism,” the Chairman stated. He also called for collective efforts to address the challenges facing the union and the journalism profession in Sokoto State.

Outgoing Chairman’s Message

The outgoing chairman, Dalhatu Abdullahi Safiyal Magiri, reflected on his tenure, which began on December 22, 2021, describing it as both historic and challenging. He expressed pride in his accomplishments and urged the new leadership to serve with courage and integrity.

Magiri extended his best wishes to the new executives and emphasized that the strength of the NUJ lies in the unity and collective will of its members.

Gratitude to Sokoto State Government

Comrade Binji also acknowledged the Sokoto State Government for their support in creating a conducive environment for journalism and pledged to continue fostering cooperation to enhance the profession.

This election marks a new chapter for the NUJ Sokoto State chapter, with members hopeful for continued progress and professionalism in the journalism sector.
