The recent victim, Nurse Ewogu Nkechi, dedicatedly treating patients, tragically lost her life to the illness.
According to hospital sources, Nurse Nkechi passed away over the weekend, prompting an immediate burial following Lassa fever control protocols. She had been diligently serving in the emergency department of AE-FUTHA since December 2019, showcasing unwavering commitment to patient care.
Nurse Nkechi, a proud graduate of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, hailed from the Ikwo Local Government Area of the State. Her untimely demise serves as a somber reminder of the grave risks healthcare workers face in the line of duty, particularly amidst outbreaks of highly contagious diseases.
Responding to inquiries, Dr. Moses Ekuma, the Commissioner for Health in Ebonyi State, acknowledged the presence of the Lassa fever outbreak. Assuring the public, Dr. Ekuma affirmed that the state epidemiologist and health personnel are actively engaged in containing the situation.
