CurrentReport Blog The Bauchi State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs. Rifkatu Yakubu, has advised female Corps members to return to their parents after completing their service, emphasizing the importance of family connection during this milestone. Speaking on Thursday during the distribution of National Service certificates to the 2024 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Corps members, Mrs. Yakubu addressed the newly graduated Corps members with a message centered on responsibility and prudent decision-making.
In her speech, Yakubu particularly directed her advice to female Corps members, urging them to prioritize family ties rather than rushing to visit boyfriends. “Ladies, please remember that your boyfriends are not your parents. Do not say that after collecting your certificates, you are heading to your boyfriends’ houses,” she remarked. She emphasized that after the completion of their national service, female Corps members should return home to celebrate with their parents, who have supported them throughout their journey.
This call highlights the importance of returning home to one’s roots and sharing such an important achievement with family members who have been pivotal throughout their education and service. “You have just completed your national service, and this is a moment to share with your family,” Yakubu added.
In addition to advising the Corps members on family ties, Mrs. Yakubu encouraged them to utilize the skills they had acquired during their service. She specifically pointed out the relevance of the NYSC’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, which aims to equip Corps members with the practical skills necessary for entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency. She urged Corps members to put these skills to good use as they transition into civilian life. “Even if you haven’t learned anything from the SAED programme, it’s not too late. Instead of going home to sit idle, find something to do to support your parents,” she suggested.
Moreover, Mrs. Yakubu emphasized the importance of wise financial management, particularly encouraging Corps members to invest their last allowance in acquiring a trade or further developing a skill that could serve them in the future. By doing so, she believes the youth would be better positioned to contribute to society and secure a stable future.
In a final note, Yakubu warned against engaging in illegal or unethical activities, such as internet fraud, kidnapping, or ritual killings, which have become prevalent in the pursuit of quick wealth. She stressed that such behavior not only damages personal integrity but also harms the broader society.
Yakubu also urged the Corps members to carefully examine their National Service certificates for any errors before laminating them, ensuring that their records are accurate.
A total of 1,652 Corps members completed their service in Bauchi State, with 1,118 males and 534 females receiving their National Service certificates. The ceremony marks the end of their mandatory one-year service to the nation and the beginning of a new chapter as they enter the workforce or continue with their education.
This message from the Bauchi State NYSC coordinator serves as a reminder to Corps members about the importance of responsible decision-making, maintaining strong family connections, and pursuing positive opportunities for personal and professional growth.
