CurrentReport Blog The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, has announced a renewed focus on posting corps members, especially medical personnel, to rural communities. This initiative aims to enhance healthcare accessibility for underserved Nigerians in rural areas.
During a recent meeting with Dr. Muyi Aina, Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), at the NYSC National Directorate in Abuja, Ahmed emphasized the pressing need for corps services in rural regions over urban centers. “Nigeria’s rural areas need corps services more than the urban centres,” he said, reiterating the scheme’s commitment to improving the wellbeing of indigent communities.
In support of this, he directed the Corps Welfare and Health Services Department to collaborate with the NPHCDA to revitalize the previously active partnership between the agencies, aimed at addressing healthcare shortages in rural areas.
Dr. Aina commended the NYSC for deploying medical corps members to rural health centers, noting their significant impact on Nigeria’s healthcare sector. Drawing on his own experience as a corps member, Aina highlighted the shortage of healthcare professionals in the country. He expressed the NPHCDA’s commitment to provide NYSC camp clinics with essential medical supplies and consumables, in a bid to strengthen the healthcare services provided by corps members.
