OAU reacts to arrest of students by EFCC

CURRENT REPORT BLOG Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has stated that it has yet to determine the exact number of students apprehended during a midnight operation conducted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). EFCC operatives carried out the raid at a student hostel in the early hours of November 1, arresting more than seventy students and transferring them to Ibadan, Oyo State. The university’s public relations officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed that the targeted hostel is located outside the school campus and noted that the university’s management is sending delegates to the EFCC office to ascertain the number of students arrested. Their primary concern is ensuring that the students are not subjected to undue harassment or intimidation.

The university aims to provide the management with essential feedback once their representatives return from Ibadan. They emphasize that they want to verify the identities of those arrested to ensure a more accurate response, acknowledging that not all individuals taken into custody may be OAU students. This initiative underscores the university’s commitment to protecting and defending its students and safeguarding their welfare in the wake of the EFCC operation.
