CurrentReport Blog Amid the backdrop of Nigeria’s challenging economic conditions and the enduring #EndBadGovernance protests, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has made a bold statement condemning the majority of the country’s leaders. Speaking on Friday, Obasanjo asserted that many of Nigeria’s current leaders should be behind bars or, in some cases, facing even harsher penalties.
Obasanjo delivered his critical remarks while addressing six lawmakers from the House of Representatives. He emphasized that when selecting leaders, the character and integrity of individuals must be thoroughly scrutinized. The former president’s comments reflect growing public dissatisfaction with the nation’s leadership, particularly in light of recent protests against bad governance.
Obasanjo on Nigeria’s Leadership Crisis
Expressing his deep disapproval of the current state of Nigeria, Obasanjo argued that true change will remain elusive unless leaders undergo a fundamental shift in mindset. He stated, “Our main problem is ourselves, and until we take care of ourselves, we may have one term of four years, one term of six years, one term of seven years. If it’s the same people and the same mentality, then it won’t change.”
Obasanjo highlighted the importance of rethinking the country’s democratic processes and governance structures, urging citizens to prioritize the character and track records of those who seek public office. He didn’t mince words, saying, “With all due respect, most of them should be behind bars, some should even be in the gallows, and that is the truth.”
