CURRENT REPORT BLOG Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, has emphasized that his party is well-equipped to reshape Nigeria for the better. Obi expressed this conviction during the launch of the campaign for the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Imo State, Athan Achonu, held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
Obi’s presence at the campaign kick-off, accompanied by the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, and other members of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), signifies his endorsement of Achonu as the legitimate governorship candidate for the upcoming November 11 election in Imo State.
Speaking at the Kanu Nwanwko Sports Complex in Owerri, Obi addressed a crowd of enthusiastic party supporters. He reiterated the LP’s capability to lead the nation and bring about positive changes. Obi urged the people of Imo State to cast their votes for the Labour Party in the forthcoming election.
Athon Achonu, in his speech delivered in the Igbo Language, outlined his agenda if elected governor. His priorities include addressing security challenges, generating employment opportunities for the youth, and establishing local government autonomy.
Protest
However, a group of Labour Party youths and supporters gathered around the venue, voicing their concerns and displaying placards with various messages against the legitimacy of Achonu’s candidacy. According to them, the rightful candidate for the Labour Party in the November governorship election is still disputed in a court of law. They referred to the Court of Appeal’s last judgment in Abuja, asserting that Ikechukwu Ukaegbu, not Achonu, won the party’s governorship primary in the state.
The protesters called on Obi to reconsider his endorsement of Achonu and to adhere to court orders regarding the candidate selection process.
