CurrentReport Blog The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has been called upon to take action regarding the prolonged detention of Frederick Nwajagu. The call was made by human rights activist Okechukwu Nwanguma, who described Nwajagu’s detention as unjust and discriminatory.
Nwajagu, who has been in custody since April 2023, was arrested after allegedly threatening to invite the separatist group, IPOB, to Lagos to protect the Igbo community. His statement came in response to threats reportedly made by some Lagos youths against Igbo residents.
Activist Condemns Ethnic Bias
Nwanguma criticized the continued detention of Nwajagu, pointing out that those who allegedly provoked his reaction remain free. In a press release, he stated:
“It is deeply concerning that those who made the initial threats which Mr. Nwajagu responded to have not faced legal consequences, while he has been left to languish in prison. This situation highlights what appears to be a discriminatory application of the law driven by ethnic bias.”
Call to Action for Ohanaeze Ndigbo
Nwanguma urged Ohanaeze Ndigbo to advocate for justice and ensure that charges against Nwajagu are dropped.
“I urge Ohanaeze Ndigbo to intervene on behalf of Mr. Nwajagu, advocating for the Lagos State Government to drop all charges against him. It is imperative that we stand for justice and equality for all citizens, regardless of their ethnic background,” he said.
Background on Nwajagu’s Arrest
Nwajagu’s controversial remarks came amidst rising ethnic tensions during the 2023 general elections in Lagos. While his comments were criticized by some, others argue that his arrest and prolonged detention are unjustified, particularly in light of the absence of legal action against those who issued threats against the Igbo community.
Ohanaeze’s Role in Promoting Justice
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, known for representing the interests of the Igbo people in Nigeria, is seen as a critical voice in ensuring fairness for its members. Advocates believe the organisation’s intervention could help resolve the matter and foster greater ethnic harmony.
