CurrentReport Blog Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to urgently address the concerns and demands raised by the nation’s youth, which have spurred widespread protests across the country. The ex-president made this appeal on Friday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during a meeting with six members of the National Assembly.
Obasanjo emphasized that the grievances of the youth are legitimate and warned of the potential severe consequences if their demands are not met promptly. “They make demands and we’re not listening to them. Many of them are frustrated, desperate, angry, and unemployed. What do we expect?” he said, highlighting the dire state of the youth in Nigeria.
The former leader stressed the importance of unity and collective effort in propelling Nigeria to its full potential. He noted that all Nigerians, regardless of status, must work together for the nation’s progress. Obasanjo also pointed out that a shift in mentality among those in governance is crucial for meaningful change.
The six lawmakers present at the meeting are co-sponsors of a bill proposing a single six-year term for the presidency, with rotation between the North and the South. However, Obasanjo suggested that the issue of governance goes beyond just the tenure of office, stating that without a change in the mindset of those in power, Nigeria would continue to face the same challenges.
