CurrentReport Blog In celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has exercised the prerogative of mercy by ordering the release of 19 inmates serving various jail terms across the state. The decision, effective from October 1, 2024, follows the recommendations of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

Out of 117 convicts set to benefit from the governor’s compassionate gesture, 19 inmates will be released outright, while others will have their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment or receive sentence reductions. This action aligns with Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to decongest correctional facilities and offer second chances to deserving individuals.

The decision was announced in a statement by the Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, who noted that the governor’s actions are in accordance with Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution. The council assessed each application, considering factors such as the nature of the offences, length of imprisonment, age, health, and behavior of the inmates.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s move reflects his dedication to prison reforms and rehabilitation, reinforcing the belief in redemption and the potential for positive change in every individual.
