CurrentReport Blog In a recent statement, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for a thorough investigation into the tragic stampede that claimed the lives of 10 individuals, including an official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), at the Sokoto State residence of former Governor Aliyu Wamakko. The incident occurred during the distribution of Sallah gifts, leaving over 30 others injured.

Expressing deep concern, the PDP emphasized the need for security agencies to delve into the circumstances surrounding the stampede to prevent similar tragedies in the future. According to spokesman Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, this unfortunate event underscores a recurring issue stemming from inadequate arrangements, neglecting the safety of attendees.

“This is not the first time it has happened at the same place, due to poor arrangements, without regard to the safety of human lives,” stated the PDP.

Moreover, the opposition party urged for compensation to be provided to the families of the deceased and those injured, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing citizen safety over sporadic cash distribution.

“Our party believes that the people deserve genuine dividends of democracy that will take them out of poverty, rather than the occasional spray of cash on the street and dehumanizing exercise of sharing out cheap items, at the cost of their safety,” the statement read.

The NSCDC, confirming the incident, disclosed that Fatima Labaran and nine others lost their lives, with Labaran tragically succumbing after heroically saving a teenage boy amidst the chaos. Initial investigations by the NSCDC indicate that the stampede occurred as youths gathered at Wamakko’s residence in the Gawon Nama area to receive annual assistance in the form of textiles materials and cash.

While the police confirmed the stampede, the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed.
