CurrentReport Blog Former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, has extended his heartfelt condolences to victims of the devastating fire that ravaged parts of two major markets in Onitsha last week. The inferno gutted the electronics market along Iweka Road and destroyed warehouses at Ifejirika Street, within the Main Market area, causing substantial loss.

During his visit, Obi sympathized with the affected traders, particularly those who lost their shops and goods in the blaze. He described the tragic incident as “heartbreaking,” noting the magnitude of the destruction, which left many traders without their means of livelihood. According to reports, goods worth billions of naira were consumed by the fire.

Obi expressed deep concern for the victims, emphasizing the significant impact the disaster had on the livelihoods of traders who depend solely on their businesses. In his statement, he urged well-meaning Nigerians to come to the aid of the affected individuals. He said, “In moments like this, our shared humanity must prevail. Let us come together to restore hope, rebuild livelihoods, and reaffirm the spirit of community that defines us.”

One of the affected traders, Mr. Jeremiah Nwabueze, who showed Obi around the scene of the devastation, thanked the former governor for his compassionate visit. He described Obi’s presence as deeply consoling, bringing a sense of comfort and solidarity during such a difficult time.

The tragic incident has sparked widespread calls for collective action to support the victims and help them rebuild their businesses. As the Onitsha community recovers, Obi’s visit serves as a reminder of the importance of unity, resilience, and compassion in times of crisis.
