CurrentReport Blog The Presidency has reassured Nigerians that the country’s leadership remains intact during the absence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume, and other ministers have been named as those overseeing the nation’s affairs.
This clarification follows public concerns and media inquiries about who is in charge while both the President and Vice President are abroad. President Tinubu is currently on a two-week working vacation, having left the country on October 3, while Vice President Shettima is on an official visit to Sweden.
In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency emphasized that there is no leadership vacuum. Onanuga stated, “It is important to note that the President and Vice President are fully engaged with the nation’s affairs, even while they are away. There is no leadership vacuum in the country.”
He also drew parallels with past situations under the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, where both the President and Vice President were out of the country, yet the government continued to function seamlessly.
All state organs, including the Senate, the SGF, and various ministers, are fully operational, ensuring the smooth governance of the nation. This statement reassures the public that the country’s leadership structure is prepared to handle such scenarios, ensuring stability and continuity.
The Presidency also highlighted that, constitutionally, the physical presence of the President or Vice President is not always required, particularly in this digital age, to perform their duties effectively.
