CurrentReport Blog In a decisive move to address food security concerns and the rising cost of living in Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to these critical issues. The President emphasized this during the public presentation of Chief Olusegun Osoba’s book, “My Life in the Public Eye,” in Lagos, where he was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Temporary Suspension of Tariffs on Essential Food Items

The government’s recent decision to temporarily suspend tariffs on imported grains and other essential food items stands as a key short-term measure to mitigate the escalating food prices across the country. Announced earlier in the week by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, this policy aims to alleviate immediate food shortages and improve affordability for consumers.

“We are taking steps to address food shortages by temporarily removing tariffs on imported grains and other food items,” stated a Presidential spokesman, Stanley Nkeocha, quoting President Tinubu. This action is part of a broader strategy to enhance living conditions for all Nigerians, particularly in the face of current economic challenges.

Long-Term Focus on Food Self-Sufficiency

While addressing these immediate challenges, President Tinubu also underscored the importance of long-term food self-sufficiency. “We will continue to drive local production and ensure that we produce what we eat and use locally,” he affirmed. This dual approach of short-term relief and long-term sustainability is central to the administration’s policy framework.

Tribute to Chief Olusegun Osoba

During the event, the President paid tribute to Chief Olusegun Osoba, recognizing his significant contributions to Nigerian journalism and politics. Referred to affectionately as “Aremo 1,” Osoba’s legacy includes his tenure as a two-time governor of Ogun State and his pivotal role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). This coalition, formed in 1994, played a crucial role in advocating for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Encouraging Future Generations

President Tinubu also encouraged other leaders to document their experiences through writing, providing valuable guidance for future generations. He highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s diversity and unity, stressing that cooperation is essential to overcoming current challenges.

“As we work to overcome our current challenges, we must remember that unity and cooperation are essential,” Tinubu stated, urging Nigerians to support the administration’s efforts to improve living conditions.

Celebrating Chief Osoba’s Legacy

The event, which coincided with Chief Osoba’s upcoming 85th birthday, featured numerous accolades from prominent figures. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and other dignitaries praised Osoba’s life of service and his contributions to journalism and public service.

Notable attendees included former Secretary of the Commonwealth Chief Emeka Anyaoku, business moguls Mike Adenuga and Aliko Dangote, and various ministers and senators, all of whom lauded Osoba’s enduring impact and wished him continued health and happiness.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reaffirmation of his administration’s commitment to tackling food security and lowering the cost of living highlights a comprehensive approach to Nigeria’s economic challenges. Through temporary tariff suspensions and a focus on local production, the government aims to address immediate needs while paving the way for sustainable food self-sufficiency.
