CurrentReport Blog President Bola Tinubu is currently presiding over his first National Council of State meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. This significant gathering marks a key moment in his administration, as it brings together some of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s political landscape.
The meeting, which just commenced, has drawn the presence of several high-profile attendees, including all living former presidents and past heads of state. Notably, former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari were seen arriving at the Villa, while former Heads of State Abdulsalami Abubakar and Yakubu Gowon joined virtually.
Top on the agenda is the fallout from the recent #EndBadGovernance protests, which started on August 1. Although initially planned as a 10-day demonstration, the protests fizzled out after a few days, prompting discussions on the underlying issues. The Council will deliberate on the government’s response to these protests, among other pressing matters.
In addition to this, serving ministers from Tinubu’s administration have been invited to make presentations to the Council. Although these ministers are not permanent members of the Council, their insights are expected to provide valuable context for the discussions. Among the expected presentations are:
- National Security: Led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, addressing the nation’s security challenges.
- Food Security: Presented by the Agriculture & Food Security Minister, focusing on strategies to bolster Nigeria’s food supply.
- State of the Economy: A comprehensive analysis by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, detailing the current economic situation and outlook.
- Infrastructure: An update on road construction and maintenance from the Minister of Works.
- Solid Minerals: A briefing by the Minister of Solid Minerals, covering recent developments and future plans in the sector.
The National Council of State is a crucial advisory body comprising the President, Vice-President, all former Presidents and Heads of State, former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, all state governors, and the Attorney General of the Federation. This esteemed group provides guidance on critical national issues, helping to shape the direction of the country.
