CurrentReport Blog In a landmark development for infrastructure in Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sanctioned the construction of a multi-billion naira bridge over the River Buruku in Benue State. This strategic project is set to enhance connectivity between Benue and the neighboring Taraba State, fostering economic and social integration in the region.

The announcement was made by the Hon. Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Terlumun Utsev, during a grand reception honoring the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.

Major Infrastructure Projects in Benue State

Prof. Utsev revealed that the bridge project would span the Ugba-Ukum communities, significantly improving transportation and commerce in the area. Additionally, he disclosed the award of contracts for the reconstruction of two critical road networks: the Makurdi-Katsina-Ala route and the Makurdi-Otukpo-Ninth Mile road extending into Enugu State. Contractors for these projects have already been mobilized and are actively on site, marking swift progress in these vital infrastructure upgrades.

“President Tinubu has also approved the construction of N2 trillion worth of houses across various states, including Benue, aimed at providing affordable housing for low-income earners,” Prof. Utsev stated. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address the housing deficit and support the socio-economic development of Nigerian states.

Strengthening Federal-State Relations

The Minister attributed these developments to the robust and harmonious relationship between the SGF, Senator Akume, and President Tinubu. He commended Senator Akume for his pivotal role in advocating for federal appointments and projects benefiting Benue State. Prof. Utsev emphasized the importance of respecting Senator Akume, who has been instrumental in bringing these significant projects to fruition.

“We will no longer tolerate any attacks on Senator Akume, especially during events organized in his honor. Respect for our elders and leaders is crucial for maintaining peace and setting a positive example for others to follow,” Prof. Utsev asserted.

Enhancing Water and Agricultural Resources

Prof. Utsev also highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to providing potable water across Benue’s 23 local government areas, aiming to alleviate water shortages for rural residents. Furthermore, the Ministry plans to construct dams in each of the state’s three senatorial districts. These dams will not only supply water but also generate electricity and support irrigation for dry-season farming. These projects are prioritized in the federal budget to ensure steady progress and completion.

Farmers in Benue can also look forward to receiving new supplies of fertilizers and herbicides, which will be distributed to boost agricultural productivity and drive the state’s economic development.

Leadership and Unity in Benue State

During the event, Dr. Mathias Byuan, Executive Director of Housing, Finance, and Accounts at the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), praised Senator Akume’s leadership and urged for unity and respect within the community. He emphasized that those who have benefited from the SGF’s leadership should refrain from any actions that would undermine his contributions.

Similarly, representatives from the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) and several Benue senators, including Senators Emmanuel Udende and Titus Tartenger Zam, lauded Senator Akume for his dedication and leadership. They called on the people of Benue to continue their support and prayers for the SGF and the state’s leadership, fostering a cohesive and progressive environment.

With these significant projects and commitments, Benue State is poised for a transformative phase, leveraging improved infrastructure, housing, and agricultural support to drive its development forward.
