CurrentReport Blog In a recent address at the Lagos Red Line launching, President Bola Tinubu voiced his strong stance against Labour Unions initiating strikes within the first nine months of an administration. Tinubu emphasized that while the concerns of Organised Labour are noted, they do not singularly represent the views of the Nigerian populace.
Tinubu firmly asserted, “No matter how fervently we uphold our freedoms and rights, instigating a strike within nine months of an administration is unacceptable.” He further advised Labour Unions to exercise patience, stating, “If you wish to engage in the electoral process, await the opportune moment in 2027; until then, let us maintain peace. They are not the sole voice of Nigeria.”
This statement follows the recent issuance of a 14-day nationwide strike notice by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress over unresolved agreements concerning the removal of fuel subsidy. Although the strike was temporarily suspended after a day of significant impact, Labour Unions continue to advocate for their demands amidst prevailing economic challenges.
Despite security advisories from the Department of State Services (DSS), Labour Unions proceeded with a two-day nationwide protest, underscoring the urgency of their grievances. However, the National Executive Council of the NLC opted to suspend the protest on its second day, acknowledging the substantial impact of their initial demonstrations.
