CURRENT REPORT BLOG The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been unconditionally and immediately ordered to be released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by Justice Adegbola Adeniyi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court. This order followed an ex-parte motion filed by Emefiele, which sought his release pending the determination of his fundamental rights enforcement suit. Alternatively, the court instructed the EFCC to produce Emefiele in court on November 6, 2023, the date scheduled for the hearing of the substantive Motion on Notice, with the possibility of being granted bail.
Emefiele’s suspension from his position as CBN Governor by President Bola Tinubu on June 9 is connected to this legal battle, as the court proceedings revolve around his release and bail pending the resolution of the fundamental rights suit.
