Despite his criticism of the verdict, Eze congratulated Governor Siminalayi Fubara, commending him for standing strong against anti-democratic forces in the country.

Supreme Court Ruling on Rivers State Assembly Crisis

The Supreme Court on Friday, February 28, 2025, ruled on five appeals concerning the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State. In its judgment, the apex court ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to halt the release of funds to the Rivers State government until a properly constituted House of Assembly is in place.

Additionally, the court directed Martin Amaewhule to resume sitting immediately alongside all elected members of the Assembly.

Eze Chukwuemeka Eze: “A Black Friday for Democracy”

Reacting to the ruling, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze expressed deep concerns over the implications of the Supreme Court’s decision. He argued that the ruling ignores key legal facts, including the alleged defection of the Amaewhule-led lawmakers to the APC, which should have invalidated their seats.

In a statement, Eze described the judgment as:

“Unfortunate, wicked, evil, sad, undemocratic, and a declaration of war against the people of Rivers State and democracy in Nigeria.”

Eze further accused the Supreme Court of siding with forces trying to undermine Governor Sim Fubara, stating that the verdict was part of a larger political plot to destabilize the state.

He added:

“For the Supreme Court to order the CBN to stop forthwith the release of funds due to the state by the FG simply exposes that these are all plots not only to serve the thinking of Nyesom Wike but to ensure that the state that lays the golden egg for Nigeria is brought to its knees.”

Eze predicted that the next few days would be crucial, as political maneuvering in the state is expected to escalate.

Nyesom Wike: Fubara Has Committed an ‘Impeachable Offense’

Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, has welcomed the Supreme Court ruling, arguing that it has ended impunity in Rivers State.

Wike accused Governor Fubara of attempting to run the state without a properly constituted Assembly, calling such an act an impeachable offense.

He said:

“It was unheard of for someone to say that three people would constitute the state assembly and make laws for the entire state.”

Opposition Lawmakers Declare Support for Fubara

Despite the Supreme Court ruling, the Coalition of Opposition Lawmakers has vowed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara will continue to lead Rivers State, insisting that governance will not be disrupted by the political crisis.

With the Rivers State political crisis escalating, the Supreme Court ruling has further polarized the state’s leadership. While Eze Chukwuemeka Eze and other critics believe the judgment is a threat to democracy, Wike and his supporters see it as a necessary step to restore order.

As tensions rise, all eyes are on Governor Sim Fubara, who now faces increasing pressure over the legitimacy of his administration and financial constraints imposed by the court’s ruling.
