CurrentReport Blog Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has confirmed that the local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024, will proceed without delay. Despite recent legal challenges, the governor assured the public that there is no legal barrier preventing the election from taking place. He urged political parties, candidates, and voters to remain enthusiastic and committed as the state prepares to elect new council leaders.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Governor Fubara made this declaration following an inspection of the Trans-Kalabari Road project on Monday. He also met with the chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, affirming the state’s readiness for a free and fair election.
Governor Fubara addressed concerns about potential disruptions, issuing a stern warning to individuals planning to interfere with the election process. He emphasized the importance of a smooth electoral process, stating, “Rivers State belongs to everyone, and I will ensure the integrity of this election.”
Despite a conflicting ruling from the Federal High Court in Abuja barring the release of the 2023 voters’ register, RSIEC confirmed it had already obtained the necessary register in preparation for the elections. The governor remains confident that with adequate security support, the elections will proceed smoothly.
