CurrentReport Blog Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State visited the secretariat of the Ikwerre Local Government Area on Monday to assess the damage caused by arsonists. The attack on the secretariat, which took place earlier that day, left the building severely damaged, with shattered glass, burnt office equipment, destroyed files, chairs, tables, and other consumables.
The attack on Ikwerre LGA is part of a series of incidents where unknown assailants set buildings ablaze as newly elected council officials prepared to assume office. This wave of attacks coincided with the withdrawal of police officers guarding the 23 council secretariats by the Rivers State Commissioner of Police on Monday.
Despite the security challenges, Governor Fubara ensured that the local government elections proceeded as planned on Saturday. Following the conclusion of the elections, the Action Peoples Party (APP) secured 22 chairmanship seats out of 23, while the Action Alliance (AA) won one seat.
Governor Fubara swore in the 23 newly elected local government chairmen on Sunday. However, some of the newly appointed officials, including those at Ikwerre, faced violent attacks on their first day in office.
Governor Fubara’s visit to Ikwerre comes as part of his efforts to ensure security and stability in the region amid the post-election unrest.
