This development comes in the wake of Niger’s military government’s decision in January to enhance military collaboration with Russia, following the expulsion of French forces engaged in combating armed insurgencies across several Sahel nations.
Tele Sahel, a prominent broadcaster, showcased a Russian transport plane landing at Niamey airport, confirming the arrival of “the latest military equipment and military instructors” from Russia’s Ministry of Defence. The report emphasized Russia’s commitment to assisting Niger in installing an air defense system to ensure comprehensive control of its airspace.
State-run Radio Television du Niger announced via Facebook that 100 Russian military instructors had arrived in Niamey, underlining the depth of the bilateral engagement. Notably, there was no immediate comment from Russia on this development, although the country has been actively seeking to expand its influence in Africa, positioning itself as a supportive ally devoid of a colonial history on the continent.
Niger, grappling with profound economic challenges as one of the world’s poorest nations, had previously partnered with Western nations in combating armed extremism in the Sahel region. However, following a coup in July that ousted elected President Mohamed Bazoum, the country has increasingly turned towards Russia for security assistance and diplomatic support.
