CurrentReport Blog On Monday, Russia stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would need to be forced into peace negotiations, following a public clash with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov highlighted the difficulty of reaching a settlement after the heated exchange between Zelenskyy and Trump in the Oval Office on Friday.
During the confrontation, Trump accused Zelenskyy of disrespecting the United States and criticized his leadership in the ongoing war with Russia. Trump also warned that Zelenskyy’s actions could escalate tensions and risk triggering a global conflict. Peskov echoed these concerns, claiming that Zelenskyy and the Kyiv government were not seeking peace but rather continuing the war.
“It is very important that someone forces Zelenskyy to change his position. Someone has to make Zelenskyy want peace. If the Europeans can do it, they should be honored and praised,” Peskov said in a statement.
The ongoing war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has intensified tensions between Moscow and the West. Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the subsequent conflict with Ukrainian forces in the eastern Donbas region further complicated peace efforts.
As the war drags on, international calls for a peaceful resolution remain at the forefront of diplomatic discussions, though the path to peace remains unclear.
