CurrentReport Blog In a recent statement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to ending the ongoing war in Ukraine, hailing it as a display of “common sense.” Lavrov’s comments came on Sunday during a discussion where he also accused European powers of seeking to prolong the conflict, thereby preventing a resolution.

Lavrov, who has served as Russia’s foreign minister for over two decades, acknowledged that while the U.S. and Russia may never completely align on every issue, there is room for pragmatic cooperation when mutual interests are at stake. He specifically referenced the U.S.-China relationship model, suggesting that Russia and the U.S. should adopt a similar approach to foster mutually beneficial outcomes without escalating disagreements into open conflict.

“Donald Trump is a pragmatist. His slogan is common sense, and it’s evident in his shift towards a different approach to foreign policy,” Lavrov said. “While the ultimate goal remains to Make America Great Again (MAGA), Trump’s approach introduces a more dynamic and human element to politics. That’s why it’s interesting to engage with him,” he added.

Lavrov’s remarks reflect his belief that pragmatic diplomacy, exemplified by Trump, could provide a pathway to resolving global conflicts, including the ongoing war in Ukraine. His comments also suggest a divergence from European powers that have been more entrenched in supporting Kyiv’s stance against Russia.

As the war in Ukraine continues to dominate international relations, Lavrov’s statements highlight the contrasting views on how to approach diplomacy and international conflict resolution. While the U.S. faces internal debates about its role in the Ukraine war, Lavrov’s support of Trump’s “common sense” approach offers a fresh perspective on how global powers could collaborate for peaceful resolutions.
