CurrentReport Blog Rwanda’s defender, Fitina Omborenga, has expressed his disappointment following his team’s 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers but remains optimistic about future matches. Speaking after the match, Omborenga emphasized that while the loss was hard to take, Rwanda had gained valuable lessons that would help them in their upcoming qualifiers.
Victor Osimhen’s first-half brace secured a dominant victory for Nigeria, with the Super Eagles taking all three points in Kigali. Despite their strong start, Rwanda struggled to find their rhythm after the early goals, which left the team unsettled for the remainder of the match.
“We are disappointed by the defeat to Nigeria because it does not truly reflect how we played,” Omborenga admitted. “We approached the match with the ambition to win and stay at the top of the group, but unfortunately, we ended up losing. The first-half goals scored by the Nigerians unsettled us, and we struggled a bit in the second half.”
The 2026 World Cup qualifiers have been a tough challenge for Rwanda, but Omborenga and his teammates are focused on learning from their mistakes. “We have managed to learn some important lessons that will help us in the upcoming qualification matches,” he added.
Rwanda’s coach, Adel Amrouche, also voiced his disappointment with the result but assured the players that the loss should not define their campaign. Omborenga and his team are now turning their attention to their next match against Lesotho on Tuesday, a crucial fixture in their qualification hopes.
“We have moved on, and our focus is now on our next game on Tuesday,” Omborenga concluded.
Rwanda will aim to bounce back from this setback when they face Lesotho in their next 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, hoping to secure vital points in the competition.
