CurrrentReport Blog Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, representing Bayelsa West, met with the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, on Friday in Port Harcourt to address the ongoing political crisis shaking the state.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the former Bayelsa State Governor disclosed that their meeting centered around the “extreme political developments” in Rivers State over the past few weeks. He lauded Governor Fubara’s “calmness and peaceful disposition” amid the turmoil, describing the current state of peace in Rivers as potentially deceptive — likening it to “the peace of a graveyard” that could easily be disrupted by a small trigger.
Senator Dickson issued a passionate appeal to youths across the Ijaw Nation and the wider Niger Delta region to remain peaceful and avoid any form of provocation or violence. He specifically urged restraint from targeting critical oil and gas infrastructure, highlighting the potential for further environmental degradation in a region already grappling with pollution.
The lawmaker also called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the standoff between Governor Fubara and Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, encouraging both parties to seek common ground. “There are no perfect fathers and sons,” Dickson noted, stressing the importance of tolerance and peaceful resolution.
He reiterated that the Ijaw Nation is not in conflict with the Federal Government or President Tinubu. Instead, he emphasized the Niger Delta’s long-standing advocacy for a restructured Nigeria with equitable resource control, environmental justice, and accelerated development.
“The Ijaw Nation sees the President as a potential partner in addressing these longstanding issues,” Dickson stated, urging Niger Delta leaders at all levels to actively engage in resolving the crisis.
As tensions simmer in Rivers State, the call for dialogue and national leadership remains crucial in averting potential unrest and preserving democratic stability in the region.
