CurrentReport Blog Senator Ned Nwoko, representing the Delta North senatorial district, has reaffirmed his commitment to the creation of Anioma State, emphasizing that his advocacy is driven by a deep dedication to the welfare and progress of his constituents. The senator made this declaration during the Anioma stakeholders summit held over the weekend in Asaba, Delta State.
The summit, which brought together participants from all nine local government areas within the senatorial district, served as a platform for discussing the long-standing aspiration for the creation of Anioma State. Senator Nwoko clarified that his push for statehood is not linked to any personal political ambitions, particularly in relation to the governorship. Instead, he stressed that his primary goal is to secure better representation and development opportunities for the Anioma people.
Nwoko strongly advocated that the pioneer governor of the proposed Anioma State should be from the Ndokwa region, which has long been marginalized despite its significant contributions to Nigeria’s economy through oil production. “The Ndokwa land, home to three oil-producing local government areas, has been neglected for far too long, suffering from severe environmental degradation. My goal is to secure freedom and development for my people,” the senator stated.
He also highlighted the transformative impact of state creation, drawing a comparison to Delta State, which was formed from the former Bendel State. Nwoko pointed out that the creation of Delta State led to significant development, including the transformation of Asaba from a small village into a bustling city after it became the state capital.
In addition to the developmental benefits, Senator Nwoko noted the political advantages that would come with the creation of Anioma State, such as increased representation in the Senate, House of Representatives, and the state assembly.
The summit received strong backing from traditional leaders, including HRM Benjamin Keagborekuzi I, the Dein of Agbor, who supported Nwoko’s push for Anioma State. The monarch emphasized that the agitation for the new state is legitimate and should be supported by all, as it is aimed at advancing the region without threatening the unity of the country.
Chief Dan Okenyi, chairman of the Local Organising Committee, also addressed the summit, stating that the gathering was crucial for bringing all Anioma stakeholders together to build consensus and strengthen the push for state creation. He expressed optimism that the summit’s resolutions would invigorate the Anioma State creation bill currently before the Senate.
