CurrentReport Blog The Southern caucus in Nigeria’s House of Representatives has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills. The caucus made this declaration during a press conference held on Tuesday in Abuja.
The tax reform bills, which have sparked widespread debate in recent weeks, include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill 2024, Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill 2024, and the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill 2024.
Addressing the press, Hon. Babajimi Benson emphasized the importance of the bills in enhancing the country’s tax system. He stated:
“The constitution gives the responsibility of making laws to the National Assembly. The Executive can present bills, and there are processes through which those bills can be treated… At the end of the day, Nigeria will be better for it.”
Hon. Fredrick Agbedi, another member of the caucus, reassured Nigerians of their commitment to delivering improved tax laws. He dismissed concerns about regional divides, reiterating that the National Assembly’s duty is to legislate for the entire nation.
“There’s nothing about a southern and northern divide. The National Assembly’s responsibility is to make laws for this country,” Agbedi affirmed.
The tax reform bills aim to streamline Nigeria’s tax system, improve revenue collection, and create a more efficient framework for administration. The Southern lawmakers pledged to engage stakeholders and ensure the reforms reflect the interests of all Nigerians.
