CURRENT REPORT BLOG The Plateau State election scene is buzzing with controversy as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reiterates its demand for the immediate disbandment of the Plateau State Election Appeal Panel. In this post, we unravel the intricacies of the unfolding drama, examining the PDP’s concerns and the potential implications for Plateau State politics.
PDP’s Concerns
Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, has voiced serious reservations about the allegedly biased decisions of the Plateau State Election Appeal Panel. This comes amidst a series of conflicting judicial pronouncements, raising questions about fairness and favouritism, particularly toward the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Allegations of Inconsistency
Damagum pointed out inconsistencies in the panel’s judgments, citing instances where a rerun was ordered in a PDP-won constituency while, in another case, the Certificate of Return issued to the PDP candidate was withdrawn in favor of the APC candidate who came second. These irregularities, according to Damagum, cast doubt on the panel’s impartiality and adherence to electoral laws.
Call for Swift Action
The PDP is resolute in its demand for the immediate disbandment of the Plateau State Election Appeal Panel. Damagum emphasises the urgent need to diffuse tensions in the state, prevent further erosion of public confidence in the judiciary, and ensure adherence to the rule of law.
Appeal to Judicial Authorities
Damagum calls upon Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, the President of the Court of Appeal, to intervene promptly. The PDP urges experienced judicial officers to restore confidence in the judiciary by disbanding the current panel, forming a new one, and subjecting the allegedly biased judgments to judicial review.
