CurrentReport Blog Popular Nigerian media personality and actress, Toke Makinwa, has sparked conversation online after revealing that she is open to being in a polygamous marriage. In a candid conversation on the latest episode of her podcast Toke Moments, the 40-year-old star said she would consider being a second, third, fourth, or even fifth wife at this stage in her life.

Speaking with her guest, fashion designer Banke Kuku, Makinwa questioned the pressure of independence placed on modern women. “As independent women, do you think that we have glamourised this notion of being independent?” she asked.

Kuku responded, “Yeah. It’s tough,” prompting Makinwa to share her personal feelings.

“I won’t lie, Banke. Let me break it down. Forget the cameras. At this point in my life, if I have the opportunity to be the second, third, fourth or fifth wife, I will take it,” she said.

The media entrepreneur went on to explain the emotional toll of always being in control. “Let me tell you what the biggest thing for me is, I am the boss everywhere and that could be tiring. You feel like you need someone to lean on. Someone that could decide what is for dinner. Must it be me?”

Makinwa was previously married to businessman Maje Ayida in 2014, but the union ended in 2017 following a publicized scandal.

In late 2024, rumors swirled that she had secretly tied the knot with longtime friend Farouk Umar, but the actress quickly shut down the claims, clarifying that the event many assumed to be a wedding was actually her Thanksgiving ceremony, and that she and Umar are just “besties.”

As always, Makinwa’s openness on personal matters has stirred mixed reactions on social media, with some applauding her honesty and others questioning the implications of her statement.
