CurrentReport Blog A somber mood enveloped the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community in Ile-Ife, Osun State, as news emerged of a tragic incident at the university’s zoological garden. The untimely demise of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, a dedicated zookeeper, has left a profound impact on the campus.
According to a statement released by the university’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olanrewaju, the unfortunate incident occurred on Monday, February 19, 2024.
Olawuyi, a veteran veterinary technologist with over a decade of experience, was attacked by a nine-year-old male lion while carrying out his duties in the zoological garden.
Despite the valiant efforts of his colleagues to rescue him, the severity of the lion’s attack proved fatal. The OAU Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, personally intervened, cutting short a meeting to assess the situation firsthand.
Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, confirmed that despite immediate medical attention, Olawuyi couldn’t be saved. In response to the aggressive behavior displayed by the lion, the decision was made to euthanize the animal.
The university management swiftly reached out to the family of the deceased, offering condolences and support during this difficult time.
Professor Bamire has also initiated a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the factors leading to the tragic incident, ensuring such events are prevented in the future.
