CurrentReport Blog In a somber turn of events, the Nigerian Navy has confirmed the loss of one of its officers, Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, after a heroic rescue operation saved 59 individuals from drowning. The tragic incident occurred on July 30, 2024, near the Okpobo River entrance, a notoriously treacherous area.
According to a statement released by Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, Director of Information, the Nigerian Navy received a distress call from the MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel contracted to Sterling Global Oil Limited. The vessel was at imminent risk of sinking due to the turbulent conditions in the region.

As the situation worsened, reinforcements were quickly mobilized. A second squadron of three boats was dispatched to support the initial rescue team. Additionally, the Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, helicopters, and a Nigerian Air Force helicopter were deployed to aid in the search-and-rescue mission.
Thanks to these coordinated efforts, all 59 crew members aboard the MV AMBIKA 4 were successfully rescued. However, the mission was marked by the tragic loss of Lieutenant Commander Gwaza, who sacrificed his life in the line of duty.
