Effective earlier this year, only those pursuing Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies are eligible to bring dependents into the country.
Montgomery highlighted that the policy shift aims to address the mounting pressure on UK universities caused by a surge in dependent visa applications.
He emphasized concerns over accommodation shortages, strained healthcare access, and educational infrastructure challenges faced by universities due to the influx of dependents.
While acknowledging the impact on prospective undergraduate and short-term master’s students, Montgomery clarified that the restrictions primarily target these categories, sparing those enrolled in long-term research programs like PhD or doctorate studies.
“The rationale behind these changes is to ensure the sustainability of our higher education sector, especially considering the diverse challenges faced by universities across the country,” remarked Montgomery.
