CURRENT REPORT BLOG Minister of Works, David Umahi, has clarified the Ministry’s stance on the choice between asphalt and concrete for federal road construction, asserting that there is no controversy and each technology has specific conditions based on the terrain. During a meeting with the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Umahi emphasized that the ministry is not comparing asphalt and concrete but ensuring contractors adhere to specified conditions according to the terrain in their designated areas. He highlighted concerns about fluctuating prices, emphasizing the need for caution in project execution due to the Federal Government’s funding and budgetary considerations.
Umahi expressed worry about the supervision of public works and pledged collaboration with the Nigerian Society of Engineers to combat quackery, enhance engineering services’ quality, and ensure proper execution of federal road projects. He outlined six policies for road construction, emphasizing stabilized subgrades, exposure to vehicular movement before pavement placement, continuous maintenance, effective design based on detailed reports, and community relations for motorable roads during the contract period. Umahi stressed the importance of professional ethics in engineering and announced plans to partner with the NSE to supervise all road projects, highlighting a focus on retraining schools across states.
