Uromi: My Brother Survived Due To His Protective Charms After Being Attacked With a Machete – Victim
The only survivor of the brutal attack on northern hunters in Uromi, Edo State, Ibrahim Isa, remains bedridden in a hospital after narrowly escaping death.
According to his younger brother, Muhammadu Sunusi Torankawa, Isa was struck with a machete near his neck but survived due to the protective charms he wore.
Isa was among a group of 16 hunters traveling from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Kano for the Sallah celebration when they were intercepted by vigilantes in Uromi.
His fellow travelers, including Abdulkadir Umar, Zaharaddeen Tanko, and Haruna Hamidan, were lynched and set ablaze, accused of being kidnappers despite carrying hunting permits.
According to DAILY TRUST, Torankawa revealed that his brother, severely wounded and bleeding, managed to hide and witness the execution of his companions.
The protective charms he carried, a common practice among hunters from their village, reportedly shielded him from fatal injuries. By the time security personnel arrived, the other hunters had been killed, leaving Isa as the sole survivor.
In his words: “He (Isa) told me that he had been attacked with a machete on his shoulder, just near his neck, but miraculously survived due to his protective charms. He told me how he hid and watched as his men were dragged one by one and set on fire. He had already resigned to his fate, believing he would bleed to death. It was only by God’s grace that he was rescued by security personnel and taken to a hospital. He is still there, fighting to recover.”
While Isa continues to receive treatment, calls for justice have intensified. The leader of the vigilantes who ordered the killings has been arrested alongside several others. The Edo State government has also taken action by suspending illegal vigilante groups and the commander of the state’s security corps.
