CurrentReport Blog Former Labour Party (LP) governorship aspirant in Anambra State, Valentine Ozigbo, has officially resigned from the party. His exit has fueled speculation that he may be on his way to joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to further his gubernatorial ambition.
Ozigbo, a former Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation (Transcorp), announced his resignation on Monday during a State Executive Committee meeting of the Labour Party in Awka, Anambra State.
In a press statement personally signed by him, Ozigbo emphasized that his decision to leave the party was driven by his commitment to the greater vision for Anambra State. He also noted that he had formally notified LP’s National Chairman and its leader, Peter Obi, of his resignation.
Ozigbo’s Official Statement
Speaking on his decision, Ozigbo said:
“A few moments ago, at a State Executive Committee meeting of the Labour Party in Awka, Anambra State, I formally submitted my resignation letter to my ward’s Chairman. Before this, His Excellency Peter Obi was duly informed of my decision as a mark of my deep respect for his leadership and the principles we have shared on this journey. I equally notified the National Chairman.”
He further stated:
“At every defining moment in history, our choices shape the future we dream of. Today, as I take a new step in my journey of service, I do so with an unshakable resolve, a clear vision, and the unwavering belief that Anambra’s best days are ahead of us.”
Ozigbo reiterated that his entry into politics was not for personal ambition but a desire to serve the people of Anambra. According to him, his decision to leave LP was based on the need to build a movement that prioritizes progress and transformation beyond party lines.
“I joined politics not for personal ambition but because I believe in the boundless potential of our people. I believe in leadership that is compassionate, that inspires, and that truly serves the people. That mission has not changed; it has only become stronger,” he said.
“Recent events have made one thing clear: the time has come for us to build something new, something bold, something that speaks to the hopes and aspirations of every Anambra son and daughter.”
Speculations of a Move to APC
Ozigbo’s resignation has sparked widespread speculation that he may be defecting to the APC to actualize his governorship ambition. Sources suggest that he has lost favor within LP, particularly with Peter Obi, who is unlikely to endorse his candidature.
It will be recalled that Ozigbo was the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election before joining Obi in Labour Party in 2022. However, recent developments indicate that his political allegiance may be shifting once again.
Political analysts believe that Ozigbo’s possible defection to APC could reshape the political landscape in Anambra, given his influence and growing popularity. However, he has yet to confirm his next political move officially.
As Anambra prepares for its next gubernatorial election, all eyes will be on Ozigbo to see which party he aligns with and how this decision impacts the state’s political dynamics.
