CurrentReport Blog In a recent video posted by Voice of the East on X, celebrated Nollywood actor Chinwetalu Agu has voiced strong criticism towards the Federal Government’s decision to change the national anthem, calling it a misplaced priority. The veteran actor questioned how this move would alleviate the economic hardships faced by Nigerians, such as the soaring prices of essential goods.
Agu, known for his poignant and often humorous critique of societal issues, used the platform to express his frustration. He demonstrated the change by singing both the old and new anthems, then remarked, “This is what its called misplacement of priorities. Change of national anthem, what has it got to do with increase in price of rice, a litre of fuel, a bag of garri, a tuber of yam?”
The actor’s rhetorical questions highlighted the disconnect he perceives between the government’s actions and the pressing needs of the populace. Agu further exclaimed, “National anthem is now a palliative, Nigeria na better cruise. The small national anthem we dey manage, e reach your turn, you change am, why?”
Agu’s critique underscores the widespread discontent among Nigerians regarding the government’s focus. He emphasized the dire conditions many citizens face, pointing out that resources and efforts should be directed towards more urgent issues like food security and fuel prices rather than symbolic changes such as the national anthem.
“Are we going to eat the national anthem?” he asked poignantly, capturing the frustration of many Nigerians who feel their government is out of touch with their daily struggles.
