Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has extended heartfelt apologies to the families of civilians killed during an airstrike in Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, December 25, claimed the lives of 10 people when the military targeted a logistics base of the Lakurawa insurgent group.

In a statement released by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, on Saturday, Shettima described the incident as a deeply saddening mistake in the fight against terrorism.

Shettima Expresses Regret

“I must say we are sorry and dismayed at the civilian casualties incurred and the excruciating pain that ensues during these extremely difficult times,” the Vice President said. He extended condolences to the families affected and reassured the people of Sokoto State of the Federal Government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism.

Support for the Armed Forces

Shettima called for understanding and support for the armed forces, acknowledging their sacrifices in protecting innocent lives. He urged residents in flashpoint areas to assist the military by providing intelligence that could help officers distinguish between terrorists and civilians.

“Security is not one man’s business. Together, we will surely make a difference as a people,” Shettima emphasized.

Federal Government’s Assurance

The Vice President reiterated the Tinubu administration’s resolve to eliminate terror groups and other criminal elements from Nigeria. He assured citizens that measures would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future, while urging continued cooperation with the armed forces.
